五、Tesco Success Stories
TESCO Company was founded in 1924 and is headquartered in Ireland. It is the largest food retail company in the UK and currently has over 2400 stores worldwide, covering various countries in the UK, Ireland, Central Europe, and Asia.
TESCO's initial store management model was limited to food retail services. After more than 80 years of hard work and changes in retail market demand, TESCO has developed into a diversified multinational chain group. In recent years, TESCO has also shifted its focus to 'non food items'. Most super stores not only display food, but also offer retail services for 'ready-made clothing' and 'daily necessities'. In addition to traditional store retail, TESCO established an online sales service in 2000( http://www.tesco.com/ ). Since its launch, Tesco.com has been the world's largest online food sales channel.
In 2005, TESCO ranked 126th among Fortune Global 500 companies. At the beginning of 2006, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu issued a survey report on the world's retail industry, pointing out that TESCO ranked fifth, behind Wal Mart, Carrefour, Home Depot, the largest furniture chain in the United States, and Metro AG, the German supermarket group.
In the previously mentioned Fortune magazine's 'Corporate Social Responsibility' single ranking, TESCO ranks first.
Board Structure and Corporate Social Responsibility Committee
TESCO's board of directors has a Nomination, Compensation, Audit, and Executive Committee, which is composed of the company's CEO and other internal executive directors. There are three committees under the Executive Committee: the CSR Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Compliance Committee. The Board of Directors controls the company's behavior through these three committees, ensuring that the company complies with social regulations in terms of social, financial, and legal aspects.
The social responsibility committee of TESCO is composed of the company's internal executive director, President of Legal Affairs and Company Secretary Lucy? Lucy Neville Rolfe is responsible, and its members include senior management personnel from various departments of the company, especially the legal affairs department and trade legal technology department. The Social Responsibility Committee is responsible for supporting, proposing, and monitoring the company's policies in social, ethical, and environmental aspects, and evaluating the threats and opportunities faced by the group. The responsibilities of this committee mainly include: ■ evaluating the company's policies on social, ethical, and environmental aspects as part of the risk management process; Identify opportunities that may help companies improve efficiency, profitability, and business prospects in terms of social responsibility; Select key performance indicators (KPIs) for corporate social responsibility, monitor and report on these indicators; Improve the understanding of 'best practices' throughout the entire group; Enhance internal awareness of corporate social responsibility within the company; Improve communication and participation plans among company stakeholders.
Corporate Social Responsibility Management Approach
At the board level
The company's board of directors discusses the strategic risks faced by the company at each meeting. Among them, the corporate social responsibility strategy is discussed once a year. At the quarterly meeting of the Executive Committee, the directors of the Executive Committee review the quarterly report on corporate social responsibility submitted by the company's management, evaluate the company's future risks and opportunities, and propose a strategic plan for the company's social responsibility.
Management level
The company's social responsibility committee meets at least four times a year, and the chairman of the committee regularly reports to the executive committee on corporate social responsibility matters. Additionally, the committee's work is discussed at least once a year at the board of directors.
TESCO uses a management tool called the 'steering wheel' to ensure the company's balanced and healthy development. The 'steering wheel' is divided into four aspects - customer, operations, people, and finance. Under these four aspects, more items are identified, each associated with a series of key performance indicators that correspond to goals that require unremitting effort to achieve. Every quarter, the company's management team is required to submit performance reports on these four aspects to the board of directors, and a summary should be compiled and sent to the company's 2000 managers, and then passed on to more employees for reading. At the same time, the key performance indicators of the 'steering wheel' are linked to the compensation and bonuses of the company's management.
TESCO's social responsibility is measured by the key performance indicators corresponding to 'Responsible and Safe' in the 'Operations' section. Through this approach, corporate social responsibility matters can be closely integrated with the daily operations of the company. The Corporate Social Responsibility Committee monitors the actual level of these key performance indicators on a quarterly basis, and evaluates the performance reflected by these indicators annually. TESCO's corporate social responsibility key performance indicators (CS KPIs) include three aspects: economic, social, and environmental.
